Lagu berjudul I Love You ini merupakan track ke-7 dari album Goodbye Lullaby yang dirilis pada Maret 2011, sekitar 4 tahun dari album sebelumnya (The Best Damn Thing,2007). Sebelumnya, album ini dijadwalkan akan rilis diakhir tahun 2009, namun ditunda karena beberapa faktor. Selain I Love You, album ini juga memiliki hits lain seperti Black Star, Smile, Everybody Hurts, What the Hell, dan Wish You Were Here.

Setelah rilis album ini mendapat banyak ulasan dari kritikus musik, dan dinilai sebagai album Avril yang paling introspektif dan personal. Tema album ini sendiri, heartbreak dan banyak dipengaruhi oleh hubungannya dengan mantan suaminya, Deryck Whibley (SUM 41). Avril sendiri menjelaskan bahwa album ini menceritakan bagaimana kita menghadapi pengalaman yang sulit, apakah itu sebuah hubungan yang berakhir, kehilangan pekerjaan, ataupun kehilangan seseorang. Meski begitu ketika penundaan rilis albumnya, Avril juga mengatakan bahwa ia juga membuat lagu menyenangkan tentang pasangan ceria. Nah, berdasarkan penuturan Avril tersebut, saya pribadi mengartikan lagu itu sebagai I Love You, meski saya pikir Smile juga memenuhi kriteria penjelasan Avril.

Secara keseluruhan, hampir semua lagu dalam album ini diproduseri oleh Deryck. Kecuali What the Hell, Smile, I Love You dan Wish You Were Here.

Well, terlepas dari beberapa kritik atas album ini, Goodbye Lullaby meraih penghargaan di MTV Fan Music Award, Gold Disc Award Hong Kong dan Japan Gold Disc Award.

Lagu ini menurut saya merupakan salah satu lagu favorit saya ketika membutuhkan ide untuk memaparkan paragraf tentang cinta tanpa alasan dalam sebuah cerita. Meski karakter personal saya dan Avril berbeda tapi rasanya ada kedekatan emosi gitu (ROTFL). Jadi karena itu saya memilih post tentang lagu ini dari semua track yang ada di albumnya, walaupun saya lebih suka Wish You Were Here.
